Barbara is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in the State of Illinois with the added bonus of being a registered Art Therapist, with her Masters, in Art therapy, trained at Adler School of Professional Psychology in Chicago. She graduated from Illinois State University with a K-12 Art Education Certificate. Included in Barbara’s clinical training and expertise are over 100 hours of training through the Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault with a focus on trauma and sexual abuse recovery.
Barbara’s experience includes working with clients in the juvenile justice system, alternative school settings, victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. She is comfortable working with all ages and her area of expertise is helping people recover from trauma and cope with anxiety which may stem from varying sources. Her recent focus also includes working with women who are experiencing midlife transitions such as menopause, divorce, children leaving home and job changes.
Based on her Adlerian training and trauma work, Barbara uses a variety of counseling approaches to help her clients return to a functional lifestyle. Developing insight into the behavior, creating strong coping skills and stress management skills, systemic family work and parenting skills are used as needed throughout the therapy process. All of these methods are done in a manner that focuses on the client and his or her needs in an empathic and accepting environment. A holistic approach to treating the individual, couple or family struggling with anxiety, depression, anger, trauma and PTSD is the basis for Barbara’s treatment philosophy. Most recently she has included yoga as part of her approach to helping promote mindfulness, mind-body awareness and decreasing symptoms of anxiety.
